Job Description:

Basic Functions:

Lead and direct the company's Engineering activities, in full partnership with plant management and plant engineering teams, in the areas of machine safety and reliability, major capital projects, automation and cost-reduction initiatives, and equipment / tooling process improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Machine Safety & Reliability

  • Ensures manufacturing equipment operates safely and has the necessary "safety stops"
  • Supports efforts to assess condition of equipment and facilitates projects to bring equipment to OEM standards
  • Identify ways to reduce Repair & Maintenance expenses:
    • In partnership with Purchasing, consolidates purchases and sourcing to reduce cost
    • Ensure Purchases are aligned with organizational needs
    • Establish a centralized source of common spare parts and/or equipment that have 'long times' or are too expensive for one plant to hold
      Capital Projects:
      • Develops proposals and capital requests for necessary building and infrastructure development and upgrades/expansions
      • Manages the overall capital budget and projects; track and report on spending; initiate corrective action on project over-runs
      • Leads efforts in the identification, specification and procurement of appropriate equipment and production technologies
      • Supports the construction projects and equipment installation with project management and technical resources
      • Ensures project proposals and capital requests meet pre-determined payback requirements for return on investment
      • Ensures projects are delivered within agreed upon budgets and timeframes
        Automation and Cost Reduction Initiatives / Equipment and Tooling Process Improvements:
        • Directs and implements automation projects and initiatives to improve labor and equipment efficiencies and improve ergonomic conditions for shop floor personnel
        • Oversees the Machine Shop operation to achieve improved speed and profitability; identifies proven approaches and technologies to increase efficiency of existing equipment and tooling
        • Leads or supports major cost reduction initiatives including infrastructure improvements (esp. reduction in utility expenses), material cost reductions (light-weighting and implementation of reduced-cost blends), and labor efficiencies which ultimately improves ROA ( R eturn o n A ssets) for the company
        • Leads the Corporate continuous improvement efforts for tooling process improvements post-launch of new products and tooling qualifications
          • Hires, directs and provides performance feedback to engineering team
          • Establishes an environment which motivates and engages talent in the engineering organization to achieve desired results
          • Coaches and mentors direct reports and other key staff in the engineering organization
          • Creates an environment which supports the ongoing training and development of all engineering staff within the organization
          • Fosters a positive work environment through open and ongoing communications and an atmosphere of teamwork for staff within the engineering organization as well as those key customers & contacts inside and outside of the company
            Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
            • Leadership and managerial ability demonstrated by progressive increases in career responsibilities; ability to work well across teams and in a matrix organization
            • Results orientation; high levels of personal initiative, energy and ownership for success
            • Superior written and oral communication skills; able to communicate across entire breadth of the organization (shop floor - esp. in a Spanish speaking environment - to executive level)
            • Strong service ethic; understands and embraces service relationship with internal and external customers
            • Strong project management skills; well organized; demonstrated planning skills
            • Demonstrated ability to develop creative business solutions; good judgment and decision making process
            • Knowledge of Lean / Six Sigma principles and concepts; has ability to apply theories in a practical and operational fashion
              Required Education & Experience:

              • Bachelor of Science Degree in Plastics, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent
                • 15+ years of experience in the packaging industry; experience in extrusion and thermoforming and/or paperboard processes preferred
                • 10+ years of experience in engineering roles and leadership in a manufacturing environment
                • Experience working in a plant environment
                • Experience in project management and team facilitation
                • Strong data analysis, change management, and process improvement skills
                • Multi-site manufacturing organization and global experience a plus
